Can I use a cable to transfer information from my old Windows Vista computer to my new Windows 7 computer?

Q: If I buy a new laptop with Windows 7- can I do a cable transfer of all my info from my Windows Vista laptop ? Are the programs compatable ?

    You can use a crossover cable to connect the two computers: http://bit.ly/fYg7bI

    From there you can setup network shares to copy data over. Note that you won’t be able to copy installed programs over to your new computer. You’ll need to re-install them using the installation media or re-download them. You can however copy over things like music and videos.

    Important data that is stored in other programs can also be copied to the new computer, but the steps are different for each program. I suggest trying a google search of

    transfer

    and look at the autocomplete/suggest searches and you should be able to find instructions pretty quickly. If you can’t be sure to post a new question and we can look up the info for you.

    Also, all programs that work in Vista are compatible with Windows 7.
