Can I uninstall Windows 7 from my desktop and then legally install it on my laptop?

Q: I have Windows 7 Professional on a desktop that I want to disable and get rid of.. Can I deactivate and remove the op system on this computer and legally install it on my Windows XP laptop?

    You will not be able to deactivate Windows.
    But if you install it to your laptop and go to activate it may require you to call Microsoft and activate the software.

    Jim, the only limitation you’ll run into is if you’re using an OEM license of Windows 7.

    If Windows 7 came installed on the computer you want to get rid of, with the license code sticker somewhere on the case, you’ve got an OEM license and can’t transfer it to another computer.

    If you purchased Windows 7 separately at a retail store, you have a retail license which can be transfered to another computer.
