Why does my document look wrong and have carriage returns and paragraph signs?
by mrg on April 20, 2011Q: I have a document that looks wrong on the screen, but when I look at Print Preview, it looks and prints fine. On the screen, it shows carriage returns and new paragraphs that shouldn’t be there, but on the Print Preview they’re gone.

You have formatting marks turned on. This is to assist in seeing how document formatting is being applied to the document. It is never printing on the document itself.
You can toggle the display of these formatting marks a few different ways, see this page from Microsoft for details: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/show-or-hide-formatting-marks-HA010102250.aspx
