How can I figure out what is slowing down my Dell computer running Windows XP?

by on April 28, 2011

Q: I am using a Dell computer with Windows XP, and it is running VERY SLOWLY. I have looked at the “Add & Remove Programs” and it seems that I have a lot of programs that I may not need…Where can I find a list of programs that are needed and those that could be deleted? I fear that automatic update managers, auto-installed toolbars, and other processes are slowing me down….

Or can I just send you a list–could you tell me what I can delete?

  1.

If it’s a program you know you don’t use anymore, toss it. If you’re up in the air on it, a quick google can usually tell you what it does and if it is important or not.

Generally the only things you really would need to keep would be related to specific hardware in your computer. For example part of the driver for your sound card or video card might be in the add/remove programs list.

You can e-mail me a list: mark@askageek.com and I can make some suggestions.
