How come some pictures that were copied to a computer become unreadable after ejecting the memory card?

by on May 26, 2011

Q: My mother has been putting photos on our desktop computer from her digital camera for about two years. On all but two occasions it has worked fine. Two times all the pictures successfully were moved to the computer from the memory card but appeared like the one on http://awesomescreenshot.com/061dlgn3a

When she ejects and removed the memory card it is no longer readable by the camera and needs formatted.

Usually I can solve her computer problems, but this one has me puzzled.

Any and all help appreciated. Thanks

  1.

The memory card might be going bad, or the data might have just happened to get corrupted. These things happen.

You might want to try running http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec on the memory card to see if that helps out at all.

If the problem persists I’d suggest replacing the memory card and doing some test photos to see if that resolves the issue.
