Can I use my cell phone to run programs off my computer?

by on June 23, 2011

Q: I would like to have direct tv, a cell phone with internet capabilities, and I want to be able to utilize my computer programs.

Am I able to use my computer programs with a cell phone that has internet capabilities or do I also need to maintain my ISP?

If I can use my cell phone that has internet capabilities to run my in home computer and programs, how do I do that?

Would you please suggest any other options?

I think you are asking if you can share the internet connection from your cell phone with your computer.

It’s possible with most smart phones and is called tethering. It’s a great feature if you travel a lot with a laptop, but it’s no substitute for a home broadband connection.

You’ll need to get a tethering plan added to your phone (usually an additional $25+ a month) and you’ll be limited in the amount of data you can download in a month and it will probably be a lot slower than your current ISP.

So it’s great for using with a laptop so you can do e-mail and surf the web while you’re traveling but tethering isn’t a replacement for your broadband ISP.
