If I have a laptop with one hard drive split into C and D will I lose my data on D if I do a system restore?

You should only loose the “D: Drive” partition if you delete it. When shown the option for HDD at the install screen just select the C: drive and then format that partition.

Your data on D shouldn’t be lost, however before you do the format you should still make a backup of the important data on the D partition.
If your laptop gets dropped or has a harddrive failure you can kiss your data on D goodbye.

Crashplan’s free software is also great for using to copy data to an external drive or to another computer.
Laptops break and get stolen all the time if you’re not keeping a backup of your important data you’re asking for trouble!
