How come my computer will not startup after getting an error while running disk cleanup?

by on July 29, 2011

Q: I have a laptop hp pavilion ze4900. It “was” running Windows XP. After start up I was running TOOLS disk cleanup using the default boxes checked. Suddenly it reported an error and shutdown. Now it will do nothing but attempt to start up and then shutdown on its own. It will continuosly repeat this process. I am trying to find the original installation disk but am curious as to what possibly happened. I can hit the F buttons and do a disk check with no problem reported. I attempted to use a XP Professional disk and the computer will read it. However, the response is that it cannot confirm that Windows was originally installed. If the original installation disk cannot be located, are there any other options? Also, any idea what happened? Thanks.

  1.

If you’re talking about a 3rd party program of some kind I’m not familiar with TOOLS disk cleanup, and a Google search isn’t bringing up any info on it.

As far as what happened specifically it would really depend on the error message. In a generic sense some files probably got messed up on your hard drive.

For troubleshooting I’d first suggest you try the XP System Restore tool. See the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

If that doesn’t work, then I’d suggest trying the fresh XP install.
