Will upgrading to Windows 7 fix the sound on my HP Pavilion notebook?

by on August 30, 2011

Q: I have an HP pavilion notebook dv6700 with no sound. the audio went out 2 months ago and nothing that has been tried by Microsoft or HP has solved the problem,I continue to try and find an answer buy no luck. I asked you before about this problem and one of your people named Mark gave me his best advice which was to let a technician come to me and see what can be done. I have been wondering though if upgrading to Windows 7 would solve any of my problems,I have Windows Vista Home Premium. I have had offers from Microsoft to upgrade since my notebook has the capabilities for Windows 7,what do you think?

Based on our prior discussion I was under the impression that your issue was most likely hardware related. This means that physical parts inside the laptop had failed or become damaged. No amount of software or Windows upgrades can fix these.

I’m sorry to hear that HP was unable to resolve your issue, I hope you keep that in mind the next time your shopping for a laptop.

If you’re looking for a cheap solution, the only other thing I can really think of is to purchase an external sound card, like this one: http://bit.ly/qDa0Wf

This won’t get the built in laptop speakers working, so you’ll need to plug headphones or external speaks into the plug on the external sound card. However, it will get you back in business for the least amount of money possible.

Thank you for new solution to sound problem, no one gave the idea of an external sound card to hear sound again.
wondering if you have a simple idea for my other problem which is the HP Solutions Center. when I try to access it, it displays the message “No HP Devices have been detected ,solution center will close now.” CarolAnn Clay

I would just uninstall HP Solution Center or ignore it, you probably aren’t going to find any solutions in there anyway!

    Picked as best answer

I guess you know that without the HP Solution Center, I can not scan from the printer to the computer,I used the scanner feature often to scan photos and pictures etc. to my computer and then was able to save them or send them as attachments in an email,so I miss being able to access HP Solution Center. I have a HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One if that’s of any interest to you.

Thanks for providing the additional details, for some of our other users this software has just been additional installed software that hasn’t provided any value.

Sadly the solution center can be troublesome, to resolve your issues I’d suggest the following:

Uninstall the HP Solution Center software, then download and reinstall the latest version from HP:

Select your operating system from the link above, and select the driver download for: HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers.

Also, if you’re getting a deal from Microsoft on the upgrade to Windows 7, I’d consider taking the offer. While it probably won’t fix your sound issue, I still feel that Windows 7 is a big improvement over Vista.
