How come my computer started using 100% of my CPU a few weeks ago?

by on September 9, 2011

Q: i have a Dell Dimension B110 running XP home ed, SP 3 and do careful weekly maintenance, and have good protection. in jan 2011 i replaced the hard drive because the 80 mb that came with the unit was full, even though i don’t use heavy utilization like gaming. lately, past 2-3 weeks, my CPU has almost always been pegged at 100% utilization and everything runs very slowly, or near impossible to run more than 3 of anything (outlook, chrome, plus any other executable, for ex) at the same time. no crashes, blue screens, etc, as i was getting before i up-graded the drive.
the computer was purchased new in 9-06. any ideas, any help??

  1.

Check your task manager’s Processes tab. You should be able to find the processes that are using the bulk of your CPU load on the list. Click on CPU to sort the list.

If you don’t know what action to take, post the names of the programs here.
