How come my computer freezes and I get a message saying the video driver has stopped responding?

Q: My system keeps freezing. I get an error message the video driver has stopped responding and has recovered. i have patches on my screen and the screen goes blank. I have a nvidia Ge force 8400 gs video card on a hp Intel core 2 Quad cpu Q6600 @240 ghz running Vista home premium with service pack 2 installed. I have tried updating the video driver and formatting the hard drive and re installing windows. I have the driver uninstalled now to get it to work at all. Is my video card no good? the computer is about 4 years old and I have a hd monitor hooked up by hdmi. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

The patches on the screen can sometimes be a symptom of an overheating video card.

Open up your computer case, put a box fan next to it and push a crazy mountain of air into your PC.

If this takes care of your problem, then you’ve got an overheating issue. Try cleaning out dust in the computer or set it up for some better cooling.

If you’re still having problems after all the other stuff you did, I’d consider a video card replacement. Also, check on the warranty for your card, many of the nvidia manufacturers have very long warranty coverage.
