How do I make sure to copy the correct files from my hard drive to my external hard drive?

by on November 19, 2011

Q: If I buy a “hard drive enclosure” so I can retrieve files from my old (mobo dead) pc to a new pc (not yet purchased), how can I distinguish between operating system, other system files, etc., and my personal files (e.g. docs, pictures, entire MS Office stuff) so that I get the “right stuff” copied onto my new pc’s C drive. Retail stores said they would do this for me for prices ranging from $80 to $150. The “hard drive enclosure” device is about $30.00
Thanks,

  1.

Please note the hard drive enclosure you are looking at for $30.00 does not include a hard drive in it. You will have to buy a hard drive separately. Granted that is not your question but your hard drive enclosure is useless without a hard drive.

If you are not very technical I would highly suggest buying an external hard drive already enclosed so that it just works for you instead of buying an enclosure and a hard drive. Here are some external hard drive options but you will have to figure out what is best for you.
