How come a backup my laptop is taking up about 5x as much space as I use on my laptop?

by on January 3, 2012

Q: I have Norton 360 on my laptop, which backs up to an external 1TB NAS. The backup tool on the laptop indicates it’s backing up aprox 120GB of data, however the backup folder size on my NAS is over 600GB, which is a problem as the NAS is now almost full. Why is it taking up so much space, and what can I do to reduce it?

It sounds like the backup is possibly keeping more than 1 version on the NAS which is why it would be taking up so much space.
If you can look through the settings in the Norton 360 and see if the laptop is set to keep more than one version/ history.
If it is not set to save more than 1 version than you might need to contact Norton about this problem.

You can also try to browse the NAS and see if there are multiple copies on it and if possible you can delete it manually as well.
