Why does the fan on my computer rattle when I power it up?

by on January 6, 2012

Q: My laptop: Gateway NV53A running Windows 7 Home Premium. The problem: My fan will rattle when powered up, like something is bouncing around in the housing. Is this 1) something that fell into my fan casing, such as a crumb or some such? Or 2) Is the fan itself falling apart? Either way, is this damaging to the fan? I don’t want to take apart my case until I know 100% for sure what the problem is–and I don’t want to stop by Best Buy and have them charge me $50 bucks to say I got a harmless chip crumb in my fan case…

  1.

There isn’t any way to know 100% for sure what the problem is without taking the laptop apart. Worse case is probably that you’ll need to buy a new fan and swap them out.
