Why is my computer so slow?

Q: why is my pc so slow

i have; win xp service pac 3
1 gig of memory
500 gig hard drive

    To help speed up your computer you can start by upgrading your memory. I would put 2 to 4 gb of memory into it total. To determine the memory you need you may need to contact your manufacturer to get the proper specs.

    thanks according to the site at crucial memory
    the most this computer will hold is 3 sticks of 512
    for a rough total off about 1.5 gb will .5gb make that much difference?

    i forgot 2 add that i have 1.7 ghz processor
