Why is the write speed of my SSD in RAID 0 so slow?

by on February 7, 2012

Q: I have 2x Corsair Force GT 120GB SSDs running in RAID 0. I’m getting read speed of 1021 MB/s which is good, but the write speed is a very disappointing 236 MB/s. Please note that each SSD is capable of doing 555 MB/s read and 515 MB/s write speed. I’m using Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z motherboard. I have 16GB of DDR3 running @ 1600Mhz, Intel i7 2600k and a Corsair PSU rated 1000kw. SATA cable for both SSDs are rated 6GB/s.
So what’s holding me back?

I would first test each drive independently and see what you get in a non RAID setup. It is possible that while the manufacturer tells you that you can get 515 MB/s writes that your system just wont give you that or maybe there is something wrong with the drives.

I suspect you are going to see similar write speeds with each drive in non RAID as you are in the RAID setup and if you do then you know that it is just how the drives work. If, however, you end up seeing better write times in the single setup then you have to look at the controller next. Maybe there is something going on there that is causing it not to allow the drives to write to their max potential.
