How can I make it so I do not see the ethernet network in the taskbar?

Q: I have a windows xp laptop which connects to either a wireless network or a hard wired network. I want to make it so that I never see the icon for the wired network on the taskbar. I have tried using the hide inactive icons always hide feature, but as soon as I plug in the cable then unplug it the icon goes back to hide when inactive. Is it even possible to do what I want to do? Personal note, I don’t want to disable anything because my laptop is also used by a computer novice who wouldn’t know how to re enable the disabled devices. The version of xp I am running is professional with the latest service pack.
