How come I cannot play video games when I have a monitor hooked up to my laptop?

by on March 15, 2012

Q: I can’t get my second monitor to work 100% with my laptop.
I just got a monitor and i have set up my laptop to run its screen as well as my new monitor (as an extension type setup). For some reason when I try to play games with my new screen, the game doesn’t work. It works on the original laptop screen but not when my monitor is plugged in. Basically would really like to run my games on my larger monitor. I am using windows 7. thanks for your help

  1.

Most likely the fact that you are on a laptop is the problem. The built in graphics card probably isn’t powerful enough to support displaying the game on 2 screens.

is there a way to have it showing on just the external monitor?

You should be able to have it setup as mirrored and then what shows on the main laptop screen will show on the external monitor. It depends on your computer how you set that up but usually one of the function keys allows it.
