Q: Hosts on a typical LAN would use a combination of static and dynamic addressing. Is it necessary to use both types?

For the most ease of administration you should always try to use DHCP (Dynamic). There are some circumstances where a Static IP Address needs to be set on a client in the event of firewall port forwarding.
In the event that you need to forward a firewall port to a specific IP Address you should set a reservation in your DHCP server to assign a specific IP Address on that client/host. You should always try to set your client/host to use Dynamic whenever possible.
