Do I need special software to rip a movie on DVD?

by on April 19, 2012

Q: I have a brand new G series HP pavillion laptop with a CD and DVD f-drive. I have windows media center/movie maker installed on my computer that can rip audio CDs. My question is with the hardware/programs on my computer can I rip DVD movies onto my computer without having to download ripping software?

The program on my computer allows me to burn onto a DVD but not from one. Thank you in advance for your help!!

  1.

You will need special software to be able to decode the DVD. If you are interested in purchasing software to rip DVDs to your your computer to to another DVD it is possible and I can give you some links.

I must also mention that it is illegal to rip movies that you do not own. If you are copying a movie you own to a computer to watch on the go or to back up your library it is legal.
