How can I get all the data off my MacBook that is now broken because water was spilled on it?

by on May 30, 2012

Q: My daughter has a 2008 Macbook that her sister spilled water on. The computer shut down completely right away. I brought it to apple and they said it would cost $750 to fix.
I have 2 questions…….

Is there anything I could do to save the info, pictures, documents, etc. that she has on the hard drive?
Also, what computer would you recommend we buy to replace it (too much $ to fix) – she’s off to college in August.
Thank you for your time! You have helped our family in so many ways!!!!

You should be able to remove the harddrive, connect it to another computer and copy off any important data. If you’ve never done anything like this, you might want to get a price quote from a few local computer repairs shops, and possibly Apple.

I’m bias toward Macbook Airs and Pros myself. Note that there should be a hardware refresh coming soon from Apple where all the laptop lines will be updated, so that might be worth waiting for. You can keep an eye on news/details here: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
