How come my computer does not work when I go from two 512MB RAM sticks to one 1GB RAM stick?

Q: Why won’t my HP Pavilion laptop’s screen boot when adding a different piece of RAM?
The rest boots as normal.
I just took a stick of 1GB RAM from another laptop that I got that I know for sure works, originally I had two sticks of 512MB RAM in this HP laptop but now I decided to change one of them to the 1GB one, I’ve tested taking out the 1GB stick to see if the screen still works after the change and it does, though it gets back to it’s old formation when putting back the 1GB Samsung stick, do you guys know what it could be?

  1.

It could be that the memory is incompatible with your system. If you are 100% sure it is compatible with your laptop then the ram stick may be bad. Double check the specs of your ram on your laptop and the stick you are adding. Make sure it is the correct format (DDR, DDR2, DDR3, etc)

One other utility you can try is a memory test to see if the memory module may be bad.

This site has instructions for running a mem test.
