How do I reinstall the operating system on my computer if the restore disc does not work?

by on June 10, 2012

Q: Hey I have a computer that i have been having problems with. I wiped all the data off the harddrive. When i go to start the computer i get the error message EMM386 not installed and a little later APATI IDE something something. When i try to set everything back to factory settings with the disc it came with it just keeps repeating itself and doesnt do anything. What do i do? I have another computer and if i switched out the hard drives to install the stuff would it affect the one thats working?

  1.

When you insert the restore disk does the computer behave any differently on bootup than without the disk inserted?

If there is no different, odds are you need to adjust the boot order of your drives so that the computer boots off the restore disk instead of your empty harddrive.

To do so you’ll need to go into your BIOS, look for a phrase like “Press F2/DEL to enter Setup/BIOS” somewhere on the screen when your computer turns on. Push whatever key it says to get into the “Setup”, “BIOS” or whatever they’re calling it. From there the screens are different from computer to computer, but you’ll be looking for something along the lines of a “Boot Order”. Adjust it so that the CD/DVD drive is in front of the hard drive for boot order. After that the computer should pick up your restore disk and get rolling.
