Why does my laptop freeze after being idle for a while?

Q: My laptop keeps freezing after I’ve been idle for too long. Any Ideas on how to fix it?

After it did it the first few times, I consulted the internet, which led me to this site. I updated my BIOS and tested my RAM with an empty report. I even tried adjusting my settings so the screen never turns off. I have also run Spybot-Search & Destroy and removed/fixed those items.

To clarify, the first few times it did it, I opened my lap top to a completely black screen with just a cursor. But now it’s moved on to showing me the desktop but everything is frozen. I’ve had to manually shut it down by unplugging it and removing the battery. (Yes, I can feel some of you cringing.) And after I’ve done that it works fine.

I’m currently working on a Dell XPS M1530 with Windows Vista. I use a fan under my lap top to help with air flow.
