Q: When a website says you need to have cookies enabled what exactly does that mean? I thought you were supposed to clear cookies. Also, how do you know if cookies are enabled?

A cookie is a small data file sent from a website, that is stored on your computer for a period of time. They provide a lot of important features on modern websites.

For example, anytime you revisit a website and weren’t required to type in your username and password again. That’s cookies at work. They’re already enabled by default in your browser, so unless you dug around in the web browsers configuration and turned them off, they’re running.

If you clear all the cookies in your browser, you’ll notice that you need to log back into all the sites you probably visit such as maybe facebook or gmail.
