How do I fix my computer when I cannot login to it because of a missing hal.dll file?

by on August 23, 2012

Q: I have a Sony Vaio model PCV 2253 it runs windows xp for some reason when i turn on the computer it will have an error saying : Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt < Windows root >\\system32\\hal.dll this i don’t have a windows recovery cd for the computer. This particular model actually has its own recovery system installed on the computer so i can actually restore windows to its factory installed settings by going to recovery mode ( NOT WINDOWS RESTORE MODE ) but i can’t put the computer into recovery mode unless i’m logged into windows which i can’t because the error pops up while its booting up and forces a restart. So any help with this would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. I am hoping to be able to get the computer going without loosing my pictures and music files. I have a lab top but it has windows 7 on it.

Since you have a bunch of important data on there:

Pull the hard drive, hook in to another computer and copy your important files off the drive.

Don’t forget to take the time to put a good data backup plan in place see http://crashplan.com for an option.

With that out of the way, put the drive back in and see this page for various repair methods: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/missinghaldll.htm
