How much RAM does my computer have?

by on November 24, 2012

Q: I just had my Lenovo laptop returned from a repair under warranty. On the report it says:

Fault description: Memory – Internal R/W Error
Repair Description: Memory Replaced.
Components Replaced: FRU 4GB SoDIMM

When I saw this, I thought – hang on, my laptop is supposed to have 6GB of RAM. I checked the original invoice: it says the laptop has 6 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM).

When I go into the control panel, it tells me I have 8GB installed memory (RAM).

I don’t understand – do I have 4GB, 6GB or 8GB RAM memory? Has the repair been carried out correctly?

I checked my original invoice: it says the laptop has 6 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM.

I then went into the control panel. There it says: Installed memory (RAM): 8GB.

I don’t understand. Do I have 4, 6 or 8GB of memory? Has the rapair

If you checked the control panel, you have 8GB of RAM installed.

RAM is normally installed in pairs, so there are two sticks of 4GB in your computer. One of them was bad, so they swapped it out.

Might be a typo on the invoice. In the end, you’re at 8GB of RAM, so who cares!
