How come copying to my external hard drive is slow but copying from it is fast?

by on January 3, 2013

Q: I have recently bought a verbatim #53071 portable external hdd. for. The first few days it worked perfectly. But then, all of the sudden its super slow!! It is usb 3.0 (but fully usb 2.0compatitable, my pc only supports usb 2.0) the thing is, that when I copy something from my verbatim to another hdd, it is super fast, but when i copu data from another hdd to my verbatim, it is super slow, (but it was fast in thembeginning) i have only used about 5% of the disk space… i have not dropped the harddrive or anything, the hdd is always on the exact same spot on my desk. My pc has 8 gig Ram and 2.6gz CPU…

What can be the problem? What went wrong? Please help…

The speed for copying from my verbatim to another hdd is 35mb/s but copying from another hdd to my verbatim is about 300kb/s!!!!

    Picked as best answer

You may want to try formatting the disk and try copying data to it again to see if it is still slow. Or if you have access to another PC try copying files there. USB 3.0 is fully compatible with 2.0. You should even see better read write speeds using USB 3.0 (not much though)

If you are still having problems see if it is still under warranty and try returning it for a new one.

Yes thank you, “jselden73”. No matter on which pc I use it it is still slower, but I contacted the verbatim-technical support and they said : “What you experiencing could be the hard drive being faulty which happens whether new or old.” And theys also said that I should return it, so thank you very much for your support and help! Means a lot! . . . Siber
