What should I be looking for in a line conditioner to protect my computer from an electrical surge?

Q: I’m looking at line conditioners to prevent damage to my computer if an elecrtrical surge occurs.What do I look for?

    Hi there – Your best bet would be to use a UPS or uninterruptible power supply device. These will give you a constant uninterrupted electrical signal to your electronic devices and give you a little bit of extra battery backup in the event of a power outage. If you are just running a computer off of this device then i would recommend an APC 550. This should provide you with about 10 minutes runtime in the event of a power outage.

    APC also offers an Automatic Voltage Regulator which can help prevent damage due to surges and brownouts but this will not provide you with battery backup in the event of a power outage.
