Q: i’d like to upgrade my laptop but all the drives are sata and i need a ata drive . how hard is it to convert to sata ? i can’t afford a new lap top but i’d like to go to around 500Gb from my 160. Did i mention that my son fried my computer drive !

Are you sure your hard drive needs to actually be replaced? What kind of error messages are you receiving when you try to turn your laptop on?

pretty sure since i’ve tried to re boot it from the original back up discs 3 times and it gets to 97 % and stops . turn it on and get a black screen .
anyway if the serial ata is the same as the sata will the sata 2 or 3 interchange and does the drive speed have to remain at 5400 or can it go up to 7200 ? also WD has several drives from 320 Gb to 1Tb for mobile so just how far can I go without having to change my memory ?

    I don’t think I’d call that a dead harddrive.

I’d strongly suggest you run some harddrive diagnostics first. If you don’t have the money for a new laptop, I’d hate to see you waste money on a new hard drive if that wound up not being the problem.

All the major harddrive manufacturers have diagnostic tools. What brand is your current harddrive?
