How come my HP Pavilion notebook has video problems when playing Ages of Empires 2?

Q: HP PAVILION g7 NOTEBOOK PC Product #: A7A44UAR#ABA : Video problem with “MS game “Age of Empires II – Conquerors”… cannot attain 1280×1024 resolution and color effects are way off. Is there a reasonable solution ?

    The first thing to check is to make sure that your video card drivers are up to date.

    Drivers are all updated.
    Still no joy.
    I understand AOE II is an older game, not upgraded and such, but surely, there must be a way to run it on this new Pavilion laptop, the same way I ran it on my 1998 Pavilion desktop.
