Should a clean install of Windows 7 professional take up 177GB of disk space?

by on February 28, 2013

Q: Hello,

I had Windows 7 on my computer. I started having some serious issues so I decided to reinstall using a bootable USB of Windows 7 Professional.

I went through the install process and got everything up and running. I then used disk cleanup to remove the Windows.old file.

I went to check my hard drive and it says 277 GB free of 454 GB.

Should a clean install of windows 7 professional really use up 177 GB of my hard drive.

Please advise me on this situation.

Thank You.

Deamo – A fresh install should ABSOLUTELY NOT take up this much drive space! Try to use a program called WINDIRSTAT http://windirstat.info/index.html. This will allow you to drill down in the directories to find where all of the disk space is getting used up.

It sounds like you may have had some issues during the install/reinstall. You may be best off by backing up, Wiping the drive, and re-installing to prevent future issues from occuring.
