How come one computer can get on our new DISH Internet but the other computer cannot?

by on March 4, 2013

Q: We just switched to Dish. My kids computers hooked right up. Mine hooked to the service but won’t go on to the internet. Something in the computer is stopping it. They have newer ones but mine is only 5 years old. Any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Annie – Can you try these troubleshooting steps that are related to a similar post?

    1. Open command prompt.
    2. Type “Ping 192.168.1.250? (no quotes) (Router IP). If successful move onto the next step.
    3. Type “ping 8.8.8.8? If successful move onto the next step.
    4. type “ping http://www.google.com” if successful move onto the next step.
If you did not complete all of these steps successfully, let me know which one did not respond.
now that we’ve verified that we can get out to the internet lets confirm that your settings on a computer should be like the following.
IP Address: 192.168.1.x (x meaning any number between 0-255 which DHCP assigns or you manually assign)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS: 192.168.1.250 (set it to this for now to confirm that dns is working)
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.250
Try the above settings and let me know if you can get out.
