Why does the processor in my old computer have white powder on it?

Q: I’m taking apart an old computer. First time.The processor has a white powder on it.What does this mean?

    The white residue powder that is on your processor is most likely thermal grease. Thermal grease helps transfer heat from your processor to the heat sink more effectively. You can read more about it here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_grease
