Is there anyway to move my software from my old computer to my new computer?

by on April 23, 2013

Q: I have a 12 year old Dell computer that is in need of a new power source. On the hard drive is music software with hundreds of projects I’ve had over the years. I’ve misplaced the software. I was wondering if there is a way for me to move that software to a new computer instead of getting a new power source for the old one.

hey PeeJaye – Thanks for visiting AskAGeek!

If you could tell me more about the software Name and version I can do a little more research. Usually in most applications you can just re-install the software and copy the project files to the new computer as the software is usually backward compatible with earlier versions (If your version was never updated).

If you do not have another installation source for the software (such as the company going out of business) then some applications are able to easily move to another computer but some are not. Especially if you are switching OS versions (XP to Win7-Win8).

If you could tell me more about the application and the version of windows that your attempting to transfer it from/to I may be able to find more info for you.
