Will having other devices connected to the Internet cause online gaming to slow down?

by on June 13, 2013

Q: My son plays xbox live a lot. He becomes frustrated when it slows down or drags and blames the other data devices in the house. Even though they are not actively engaged in online activitites, will simply having several devices setting idle take up the band width and slow down his game?

  1.

The answer is it really depends. If you have a Windows computer connected to your network and it decides it is time to check for and download updates then even though someone is not actively using the device it is possible that the device is eating up bandwidth.

The reality of it is the Internet is not perfect and you can have a good connection one minute and the next minute it just turns really bad. It could be your connection, it could be a person you are playing with, or it could be one of the 20 to 30 links between the people that are playing that is having an issue.

I game online as well and it is very frustrating when the connection causes issues. My suggestion would be to say hey lets go do something else if there are connection issues right now and you can game later. Maybe to go to the park or spend some time some other way. Life is to short to get all worked up over a game.
