Q: I just downloaded Registry Patrol and I want to know if Norton Anti Virus comes with it? In reading the information about Registry Patrol it appears to be included. Is this true and if so how to I activate it?

Are my screen resolution problems and my browser being hijacked problems related to each other?

by Guest Geek on August 20, 2009

Q: For the last few weeks I’ve had problems with the google virus. It is opening new tabs on links and redirecting me to other sites namely fasttools and using search2.google.

It maybe unrelated but I since I used an SVHS cable to connect my computer to a TV my has been stuck on what appears to be something like 800 x 600. The problem is when I go into the display settings I get an error saying something about C:windows\system32\rundll32.exe.

I have norton antivirus running and it has quarantined a couple of trojans and I thought that would sort it out but no luck. I am still having the issues.

So my two issues are that my display is stuck at 800×600 and google seems to have hijacked my browser. I’m using firefox with noscript and adblock on a computer running Windows Vista. What can I do to solve these problems?

Do I need both webroot spysweeper and Norton Internet Security?

by Guest Geek on August 10, 2009

Q: I have webroot spysweeper 6.1.0.128 and my subscription to Norton Internet security is about to expire. Do I need both? I am getting all these “world is coming to an end” messages from Norton. Also there are 2 products: NIS 2009 and Norton Antivirus 2009 – what is the difference and do I need either one?

Error when compressing HP recovery drive

by Pamela on July 12, 2009

Q: When I tried to compress my HP recovery drive I get the following error message: Invalid root in registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\HPActiveSupport\HPLDR\Cpmpact” code 80070002

My operating system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit and my computer is an HP Pavilion entertainment Notebook.

I am also having the following problems:
1) My System restore will now only take me back 5 days, which is not far enough back. This happened after I backed up my registry when I was trying to fix iTunes (could not burn a disc in iTunes.)
2) I cannot do a disc cleanup, when my computer starts I get the error message “The procedure entrypint ARCON_GetConnectVersion could not be located in the dynamic link library ArcCon.dll.”
3) My files will not back up to Norton online storage, and the option to burn them to disc is not shown, even after Norton was reinstalled with a newer version.

A: You should not alter or compress the contents of the HP recovery drive. Doing so could cause the recovery drive to malfunction. Here’s a quick procedure for using the recovery drive to restore your computer to its factory state: Read the rest of this entry »

How come Windows Update, HP assistant, and Internet Explorer have stopped working?

by Guest Geek on June 30, 2009

Q: I have an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop with Vista installed. I’ve been getting pop-ups that Windows Automatic Updates has stopped working, then the HP assistant (a toolbar type of thing on the desktop) stopped working, then the CaTrayLauncher stopped, and now Internet Explorer takes several attempts before it finally opens.

My Norton360 says everything is fine. What do you think is causing it? What can I do if it is a virus? I don’t use Vongo, can I delete it and the tray thing?

The Best Antivirus Program as of Today

by matt on June 10, 2009

Q: I have Webroot Antivirus and Norton installed on my computer. Norton expired and I tried to renew it but as I was doing that Norton told me that I would have to uninstall Webroot. Webroot is also about to expire so I am wondering which antivirus program I should keep. Which antivirus program is the best right now?

A: Since antivirus programs stay running all the time to check files as you use them you only want to have one installed and running at a time. When you have more than one running at a time they could seriously degrade the performance of your computer. Read the rest of this entry »

Could installing Norton slow down my computer?

by Guest Geek on June 7, 2009

Q: I’m running Windows XP on my Eee PC 1000he that I’ve had for about three months. I’ve had AVG the entire time and I’ve just installed Norton recently when I learned that it was free on my computer.

My computer is running is very slow and is acting up on multiple occasions. I run firefox rather than internet explorer. Other than the occasional torrent that I always scan before downloading, I don’t download anything. But, obviously somewhere along the line something slipped through. How do I remove a vertical taskbar that has attached itself to my web browser?

by Guest Geek on May 21, 2009

Q: A vertical task bar has attached itself to a friend’s browser. It is on the right. It covers his scroll down slider and his mouse has no effect on it. There is a black icon of a bug that covers the X that closes it out. The techs at Norton say it’s not a virus or an infection but they could not remotely remove it. Rebooting doesn’t affect it. It doesn’t seem to do anything but be annoying. Any ideas?
