Is there a device that will allow me to switch my monitor between my computer and Xbox 360?

by Guest Geek on November 1, 2009

Q: Is there a cable that allows me to switch between using my computer monitor for my comp, as well as using my monitor for my Xbox 360? I already have the cables for the Xbox 360 to connect to the monitor but I have to unplug my monitor from my comp each time I do and vice versa.

What are the latest and best technologies I should put in a new computer I am building?

by Guest Geek on October 22, 2009

Q: I am thinking about buying a new computer. I will be using this computer for Home Use, Microsoft Office Software Applications, Internet and Games with Windows XP Professional.

I know I want to stick with an Intel processor, Intel (or compatible) motherboard, 2 or 3 PCI Express expansion slots, at least 2GB of RAM, SATA hard drive, at least 4 USB (2.0) and a 512 MB ATI or Nvidia video card.

I was hoping to be able to order these parts off of newegg.com and assemble the computer myself. However, when I started looking at parts I discovered that I have been out of the loop of computers for a little too long and some questions popped up. As a result, I need to get some advise from someone that has been in the loop on the changes and current trends in the computer world.

The questions I have are:

1) Currently, what are/is a good chipset for Core 2 Duo Intel processor(s)?

2) Will I need Hardware Virtualization Support?

3) With current trends, is it best to go ahead and go for DDR3 memory module or go with a DDR2?

4) Is there anything else that you can think of on changes in the computer world that I need to be aware of? I have been out of the loop since like 2004.

What specs should I be looking for in a computer as someone about to start college to become a software engineer?

by Guest Geek on September 15, 2009

Q: I am going to college to become a Software Systems Engineer. What I would like to know is if you have any suggestions as to what kind of computer I should get or at least what some of the specs I might want to have. For example which processor and which sound and video cards and what type(s) of drives and CD burners etc. I would greatly appreciate an answer to this question because I have done lots of searching and have really found nothing of import.

Should I buy a new computer or upgrade my six year old computer?

by Guest Geek on August 7, 2009

Q: I have a six year old desktop with an AMD Athalon(tm) xp 2000+and 2 256MB DDR RAM. It’s begun giving me problems like loose RAM, Heat sink and fan knocking off.

Should I just junk it and buy a new one or try and upgrade? My only usage is email, web browsing, online games and a little bit of MS office at times.

Getting audio to work when connecting your computer to your TV

by matt on June 8, 2009

Q: I have connected my computer running Windows XP to my older TV via a VGA to S-Video converter. The video works fine. I am having difficulty with the audio. I connected an audio cable from my PC tower to the L & R audio inputs on the front of my TV but I still do not get any sound. I have tested the sound coming out of my computer and it works fine with the with head phones so I think the problem is on the TV side.

A: Instead of connecting the audio to the front of your TV you should connect the audio to the nearest audio connection on the back of the TV where you are connecting your S-Video. Most TVs have an audio input for each video input. This means that you usually need to connect the audio to the audio input that goes with the video input you are using.

You should be able to find more details in your manual or if you have lost your manual you can usually download a PDF version of your manual from the manufacturers website.

How come my computer stopped booting?

by Guest Geek on May 30, 2009

Q: I wanted to see If someone could help me out. My computer one day just stopped booting. It turns on but the hard disk drive/ Optical Disk Drive indicator light wont turn on or blink. So I’m assuming it has something to do with the power unit or the hard drive. Any one ever experienced this? I wanted to see If I could take some advice and maybe fix it on my own.

Is a 300 watt power supply enough to run my new computer?

by Guest Geek on May 28, 2009

Q: My computer fried itself today (literally, it smells all burny and everything) so I’m buying a new one with these specs.

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed w/COA
  • AMD Phenom X4 9500 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • 3 GB DDR2 RAM
  • 720 GB (2 x 360GB) SATA hard drive
  • 16x SuperMulti DVD±RW DL drive with LightScribe Technology
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT PCI Express video card
  • High Definition audio, 8 speaker configurable
  • 22″ HP Widescreen Rotating LCD Monitor w/HDMI & USB Hub

It only has a 300 watt power supply. My question is, is that enough? If it’s not and I have to buy a bigger one, does it have to be the same brand as the computer? It’s an HP.
