How come my laptop freezes when I try to burn a DVD?

by Guest Geek on October 30, 2009

Q: I am using a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and have burned DVD’s with no problem for quite a while but recently every time I burn a DVD the laptop has freezes throughout the DVD. I went to Dells website and tried updating everything (DVD/CD is TSSTCorp TS-L632H) but updating has not corrected the problem. Is there anything else I can do to try to fix this?

Fixing your video card problems

by matt on June 18, 2009

Q: I play World of Warcraft. I used to play it quite frequently last year. Once in a while during gameplay the screen would freeze black but then things would resume as normal. This might happen once an hour. When I closed the game or minimized it the error bubble at the bottom on my screen would say “Display driver igfx stopped responding and has recovered”. Each time the screen goes black, that message will be there. So if it happens 5 times you have to close out that message five times.

I had taken a several month break from the game and just resumed yesterday. The freezing/black screen/igfx message is now occurring every 10 seconds. This is making it impossible to play without wishing I had a sledgehammer.

This is all the info I can find on my computer:

Windows Vista Home Premium – Service Pack 1 – 32 bit

2GB RAM

Intel cpu – t2250 @ 1.73GHz

display driver mobile intel 945GM express chipset family

dell inspiron e1705

A: The first thing you should do in this situation is try to update your video drive. If that does not work then you will want to go to Dell or Intel and download the latest video drive for your video card. Once you have downloaded the driver then you will want to uninstall your previous drive and reboot. Your video will be messed up and you will have to use the default drive built into windows. From there you can then install your latest drive. Follow the detailed instructions below for these two options. Read the rest of this entry »

When laptop batteries will not hold a charge

by matt on June 12, 2009

Q: I have a Dell Inspiron 110 and the battery light continually flashes. It repeats 4 yellow flashes then 1 green. Currently I get 30 minutes of use with a battery that my power meter tells me is fully charged. How can I get more time?

A: Most laptop batteries are expected to last between 2 to 4 years depending on how many times you recharge them. With a little research I was able to figure out that the laptop model you have was first introduced about 6 years ago. This means the battery in it could be well beyond its usable life and unable to hold a proper charge. Read the rest of this entry »

How come my taskbar and icons don’t always show up when I start my computer?

by Guest Geek on June 9, 2009

Q: I am having a problem with my Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop running with Windows XP Home Edition.

Whenever I turn off the computer and reboot, windows re-starts but the icons do not appear, nor does the bottom task bar. I can see my background image and I can access the task manager by hitting ctrl+alt+del.

I can see processes running but no applications. I can resolve the problem by restarting usually up to 2-3 times, and eventually the system boots up with the icons and runs normally.

I have contacted Dell and outside of using their pay to help service, run all the hardware diagnostics to no avail.

I have used Malware Anti-Bytes (Spam Blocker), A CCleaner (Registry Cleaner), and Avast! Antivirus, but the problem still persists.

I am out of ideas and any help would be very much appreciated!

What can I do to fix the print spooler on my computer?

by Guest Geek on March 23, 2009

Q: I have a Dell Insperion laptop computer. For some time now, the response time for internet applications has been getting slower. Sometimes, it even ignores closing an application when I click on the X. It is freezing up sometimes and this weekend it did not show the printer I have installed and gave an error message about the printer spooler not running. I talked with someone that I know and he walked me through a few things trying to fix the printer spooler message and finally said the computer needed to be stripped and the software reinstalled. Does this sound right? Also, what does it mean to be stripped?
