What can I do to get the fan on my Dell Dimension to be quieter?

by on May 16, 2013

Q: Problem: Fan is TOO LOUD! Dell Dimension 3000. Fan is not attached to heatsink. Heatsink is clean, so is fan. I removed green cover but that didn’t help. I put my hand over the back of the fan thinking the fan would just run faster. Nope. It quieted down immediately. Removed my hand and the fan sounded like an airplane prop! So now I have it covered in the front to block airflow and it’s quiet as can be. Heatsink feels to be normal temp. Any problem operating this way and what could be the cause? I had this problem before and it went away by itself. Can’t figure this one out.

How can I copy everything off my old hard drive onto my new hard drive and use the old one as a backup?

by on May 13, 2013

Q: I have a Dell XPS 720 PC running Windows XP. I just purchased a 2nd hard drive. I want to set it up with many of the programs already installed on the 1st drive and then REMOVE it and put it away somewhere. If anything happens to the 1st I will use the 2nd as a back-up.
That being said, I have had zero problems with my computer. I removed the 1st drive and put in the 2nd. I turned the computer on and it said the it could not Boot. I put the Operating System CD into the disc drive, shut the machine off and restarted it. The progress bar went to the end but just before going on to the desktop the machine restarted itself. This happened repeatedly.
I removed the 2nd hard drive and the 1st back in. Turned the computer on and it started without issue.
What am I missing?

How come I am getting a message that I need to update a driver while upgrading to Windows 7 even though I already updated the driver?

by on May 1, 2013

Q: I’m trying to upgrade to Window 7. I ran the Win 7 upgrade advisor and it told me I could upgrade. When I started to install it told me I needed to update the driver for Storage controllers: ADY6E7E4 IDE Controller. So I went to Dell and downloaded and installed the driver but I got the same message that I needed to update that driver. I’m guess it has to do with the things that uses IDE cables. The only things I have that uses IDE is my floppy disc drive which I don’t use so I don’t really care about and my I/O board which is where my start button is located. I know if I disconnect it my PC won’t start so I’m just worried that if I upgrade and it doesn’t work properly my PC won’t turn on. If I go ahead with the install. Could it keep me from starting my computer?

Is there anyway to move my software from my old computer to my new computer?

by on April 23, 2013

Q: I have a 12 year old Dell computer that is in need of a new power source. On the hard drive is music software with hundreds of projects I’ve had over the years. I’ve misplaced the software. I was wondering if there is a way for me to move that software to a new computer instead of getting a new power source for the old one.

Is there anyway I can use the key on the label that came with my computer to reinstall the operating system?

by on March 21, 2013

Q: I am purchasing a Dell Latitude E4300 from my school at the end of the year. They are currently using volume licensing, and the laptop has Windows 7 Pro. When I purchase the laptop, it will not have an operating system once the licensing expires. The label on the bottom says the OEM was Windows Vista Business. Isn’t there a way to reinstall this operating system? The price for the laptop should be excellent, if not free. But I do not want to purchase software if I don’t need to. Thank you!

How come my Dell XPS 14 does not shut down completely when I tell it to shutdown?

by on February 11, 2013

Q: I have bought a new laptop, Dell XPS 14Z, 13 inch, with Windows 7 Premeium installed on it. However, I have a couple of problems from the very start which makes me regret buying it.

The laptop works great, but sometimes when I try to shut it down, it doesn’t. Just a blue window with shutting down sign but it never turns off perfectly.
The second problem is even deadlier. A blue screen, once a day or two days once appears and I never know why. This death screen comes from nowhere without any reason, I scanned my computer and there’s no trace of virus. The only think recognizeable from the screen is this file ‘tixhci.sys” file. Can anyone help me here?

Many thanks in advance,
PS, I don’t know much about BIOS, so please tell me step by stem if the problem is related to the hardware.
