What can I do to get the fan on my Dell Dimension to be quieter?

by on May 16, 2013

Q: Problem: Fan is TOO LOUD! Dell Dimension 3000. Fan is not attached to heatsink. Heatsink is clean, so is fan. I removed green cover but that didn’t help. I put my hand over the back of the fan thinking the fan would just run faster. Nope. It quieted down immediately. Removed my hand and the fan sounded like an airplane prop! So now I have it covered in the front to block airflow and it’s quiet as can be. Heatsink feels to be normal temp. Any problem operating this way and what could be the cause? I had this problem before and it went away by itself. Can’t figure this one out.

Why does the fan on my computer rattle when I power it up?

by on January 6, 2012

Q: My laptop: Gateway NV53A running Windows 7 Home Premium. The problem: My fan will rattle when powered up, like something is bouncing around in the housing. Is this 1) something that fell into my fan casing, such as a crumb or some such? Or 2) Is the fan itself falling apart? Either way, is this damaging to the fan? I don’t want to take apart my case until I know 100% for sure what the problem is–and I don’t want to stop by Best Buy and have them charge me $50 bucks to say I got a harmless chip crumb in my fan case…

Will setting up 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans in my case give me enough airflow?

by on June 26, 2011

Q: I just installed fans in my new computer. I have 2 intake fans [200mm (front) & 140mm (side)] and 2 exhaust fans [120mm x2 (top and rear)], would this fan set up have effective airflow in my case? I have the CoolerMaster HAF 912.
