Associating documents with the correct program

by on July 31, 2009

Q: My computer at work will only open email attachments in the picture viewer no matter what type of document it is. How can I change this to open documents in the correct program?

A: In Windows XP or Vista I would suggest dragging an offending attachment to your desktop. Then right clicking on the file and select “Open With…“. A menu will then pop up allowing you to select the program you want to open the file with. There will also be a check box at the bottom of the window allowing you to “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file“. Once you select the correct program, check that checkbox and click OK and the file will open in the program you selected.

You should now be able to open this type of file in the program you selected right from your e-mail client.

by on March 22, 2009

Q: Last night my laptop locked up on me and I shut it off. This morning I brought the computer back up and Windows works and I am able to get on the Internet. My only problem is my pictures, videos, music, and documents are not there. Just wondering if there is anything I can do before taking it to a shop to be worked on.
