What is broadband and how can I watch Netflix without interruption?

by Guest Geek on June 12, 2009

Q: I don’t have Internet at home and frankly I can’t afford it. Will purchasing a wireless card allow me to access the internet on my computer? Its not an old computer I don’t think( M1330 dell, 3GB).

I’m just confused and i do have an unlimited data on my phone…now the thing is if i can in fact use these cards to get internet am i limited to what I can buy? I have a sprint phone and a dell computer. So will I have to get a sprint card?

How much do these things usually run and what determines the type of card I should purchase? All I really want is unbroken internet access so that I can watch a youtube or netflix video online. I want to be able to watch it all the way without any pauses or freezes. I am really tired of just using the internet from 8-3 at work. I use the public transportation so would I be able to use this card on the bus?

Someone suggested I the cheapest broadband service and then get an Internet adaptor so that I don’t have to fuss with a wireless card.

But what is “broadband’” and is that something I will have to get from like comcast or AT&T? I want avoid their outlandish prices

The length of your phone cord does not matter that much

by matt on June 7, 2009

Q: I currently have a dial-up internet connection and a Compaq Presario 2200 laptop computer.

When I setup my computer and internet, the instructions said that the phone line should not be longer than six feet for the best internet service. This was also the instruction for high speed when I had that service.

I want to move my computer to a location in my home that would require a phone line longer than six feet. Before I move it I wanted to know if moving it with a longer phone line will effect the quality of the internet connection and if it does is there something that can be done to mitigate this.

A: There is some logic to limiting the length of your phone cable between your outlet and your modem. It is not something you should really stress over though because there is a lot of phone cord beyond the wall jack. Remember the phone cord, beyond the wall jack, runs through the house and out to the pole. Read the rest of this entry »

How come I cannot get the LAN connection on my laptop to work?

by Guest Geek on May 16, 2009

Q: My son is in the military currently stationed in Maryland. He has his laptop, running Windows Vista, with him. He is trying to get on the Internet from his barracks. He can see an excellent signal from a LAN but can not figure out how to connect into this and get on the Internet.

Either that he wants to bluetooth his cellphone and use that to connect (he has unlimited data on the cellphone). Can anyone help me, he prefers to try the LAN first, if that fails, then the cell phone.
