Should I go with a MacBook Pro or a Lenovo Yoga?

by on March 20, 2013

Q: I am trying to decide what my next laptop should be, I’m deciding between a MacBook Pro, which is what ive been using for the past 5 years, or the Lenovo Yoga (i7 not i5). I am a student and I travel quite regularly. I primarily use my laptop for word processing, music (pretty continuously), social media, very basic photo editing, and occasional movies. What would you recommend?

How come my MacBook Pro with an i7 is running much slower than other MacBook Pros with i7’s?

by on February 20, 2013

Q: My Macbook Pro 13″ i7 is running poorly.
So I have a Macbook Pro 13 in with i7 processor and junk yet it seems to run like it doesn’t have these features. My friend has the model lower i5 processor one and it runs better than mine. Her computer’s fan only runs when a disk is in the drive. Mine runs almost every time its on the internet as well as just sometimes when I am using it. I also noticed that we both have the Dolphin Emulator and when playing games hers runs completely fine at 100% speed with no fan the entire time while mine runs at 67% or lower and yet again the fan powers right on. It’s starting to bother me because I figured that a larger processor and junk would allow for a faster computer and it seems to be the opposite.

Is there any risk of installing Windows operating systems on my MacBook Pro using VirtualBox?

by on January 19, 2013

Q: I would like to know if there is any risk of installing windows operating systems on my MacBook Pro using VirtualBox. My understanding is, yes the virtual windows machine could get a virus but would it also transfer that virus to my mac operating system. For instance some viruses that make copies of everything as .exe would I have that happen on my mac files as well or just on the virtual machine? My idea was if I had windows installed on virtualbox and backed it up I could then delete it if I got a virus and then just start up a new machine. I hope this all makes some sense.

How come my computer tells me the external hard drive was not correctly disconnected?

by on November 30, 2012

Q: I’m using a Macbook Pro and to backup my important files I use a external hard drive thats 1TB. Recently whenI have been plugging my computer into the HD it gives me a notice that the last time the hard drive was not properly ejected and that the MAC is working to revive information. Then the X-Drive disappears and I’m not able to access it in anyway even though its still plugged in. this info is so important and it will kill me if I’ve lost it all forever!! Please let me know if I can do anything.

How can I backup my photos and music on my MacBook Pro that will not boot?

by on November 26, 2012

Q: I have the 3 beeps of death, and am going to take it in to get fixed, but I want to back up my photos and music first. Is there any way I can do this? As of now it will not turn on at all, I just need to back it up!

Here are the steps I went through:
1. Computer (Early 2011 MacBook Pro bought on the Certified Refurbished Apple Store Christmas Day 2011) crashes in the middle of a Skype meeting. Bottom half of the screen and little bits of the top half turn green and gray. A warning pop up shows up (half covered in green pixels) and tells me to shut my computer down immediatley.
2. Held down the power button until it turned off.
3. Briefly freak out.
4. Finish Skype meeting on phone, then turn computer back on (after 3-4 minutes). First example of three beeps of death comes up, lasts breifly then the computer turns on
5. Computer operates normally, I log in, begin to file a report to apple when it logs me back out automatically.
6. Log back in, then bottom half of the page gets green pixel stripes (I took a picture this time).
7. Hold down power button until it shuts down again.
8. Give it a few minutes then try again.
9. No dice, computer just begins giving me the 3 beeps of death continuously and not turning back on.
10. Plug it in and let it sit, completely shut down until the next day.
11. Buy an external harddrive the next day and hope to turn it on and it will operate enough for me to back up my files (I have been lazy and not done so). Try turning on the computer again and get the 3 beeps continuously. Shut it back down and tried again with my camera out, still not operating at all.
12. Look into Apple online support and check out serial number (for my coverage), and it says the serial number doesn’t exist.I had the 3 beeps problem last summer and followed some Youtube advice to fix it (obviously didn’t work) and during that Apple said I had no coverage as well, until I told them it was refurbished, so maybe they confused it since I am the new owner of a refurbished computer.

Seeing as it is a RAM issue, should I be worried about my memory? What can I do to back up my files?

Why does my MacBook reboot each time I try to connect it to my HDTV via HDMI?

by on February 7, 2012

Q: I have a LG 55LK520 1080p hdtv. I am trying to connect my HDMI cord to the TV to watch movies and what not. I did this with my previous TV (Vizio, 32inch, 720p) and the same cords and connection.

Every time I connect the TV to my laptop (Macbook Pro, 13inch, 2010ish) it is rebooting/refreshing every 5 seconds or so. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have tried adjusting the resolution to no avail. Thanks for your help.

How can I record video directly from my digital camera to my MacBook Pro?

by on December 6, 2010

Q: How can I record video directly from my digital camera to my MacBook Pro?

I recently bought a Canon PowerShot SX130 IS, and I was interested in recording video directly to my Mac OS X computer instead of first to the camera and then transferring it. It seems that once I connect the camera it turns into simply a USB drive and no longer lets me record or take pictures.

I assume this is intention from Canon but it’s unfortunate because it prevents me from an extra usage.
