Will converting a 320kbps MP3 to LAME 320kbps still sound good?

by questionasker on July 19, 2010

Q: I’m re-encoding a 320 kbps CBR mp3 file to 320 kbps CBR (the same constant bitrate) using LAME 3.98.4 I know this makes no sense at all, its more of a theoretical test. I know I will lose some sound quality. My question is how much will I lose? Will the resulting mp3 still be at least FM radio quality? Would a regular 192 kbps mp3 sound better? Thank you so much for your time!

Should I get a flash or HD based MP3 player?

by clarinetchloride on December 8, 2009

Q: I’m debating what kind of mp3 player to get for Christmas, and I’m stuck on whether to get flash or HD based.

I have about 19 GB of music, and I will probably get more soon, so the more space the better. Since HD can have larger storage, I’m considering one of those.

However, I’m extremely clumsy and tend to drop my electronics a lot. Additionally, I will be using my MP3 player at the gym. So I’m not sure if HD is really the best choice for me. Does HD really get affected that much with being dropped, or are reviewers just exaggerating?

But at the same time, I’m really poor, and cheaper is best. So what do you guys think. HD or Flash?

Additionally, if you guys want to recommend a specific MP3 player, that would be awesome. I’ve had iPods in the past and want to try something new.

Converting MP3 and WMA files to higher quality

by matt on July 9, 2009

Q: I have an audio converter that converts between MP3, WMA, and other formats. If I have some songs at 128kbps and convert them to 320kbps does doing this actually raise the quality of the song if I ripped the song to the computer at 128kbps? How can you increase quality if there is only so much given?

A: If we were on a TV show like CSI Miami or NCIS we would be able to increase the sound quality of a 128kbps music file by converting it to 320kbps but in the real world it does not work that way. Once you have ripped your song from your CD and converted it into a digital representation there is no way to increase the sound quality. Converting from 128kbps to 320kbps will just increase the size of your file and you will end up with the same or worse sound quality because converting usually means there is a chance you can lose some quality. The only way to increase your sound quality is to go back to your source, the CD, and rip the music again at a higher quality.

If you have a chance you should do some experimenting. You should rip a few different songs at 320kbps, 192kbps, 128kbps and some of the other bit rates available. Take the time to listen to each of them and see what kind of a difference each bit rate it makes for you so that you can decide what one you like best. Different people have different needs. Personally I’m very happy with 192kbps or 128kbps and can’t really tell the difference.
