How come my ethernet connection drops when my laptop cover is moved?

by Guest Geek on May 30, 2009

Q: I have a Toshiba M-10 laptop running Windows XP Pro and IE8. The laptop drops cable ethernet connection when cover is moved. I have a 4″ block under the back now and cover tipped away back and it holds fairly well. I checked all cables and usual stuff. Any idea why it disconnects?

Is it okay to open up my new laptop?

by Guest Geek on May 23, 2009

Q: I have a brand new (maybe 6 wks old) Toshiba P305D-S8900. It is under warranty, of course. I tipped it as it was starting up to take off a dust sticker and it started to make a funny noise. I thought it was the DVD drive because it was a similar noise to when my XBOX 360 got kicked over and scratched my game inside. Checked the DVD and it was fine, but the noise started up again so I realized it was the fan.

My problem is, I’m currently deployed overseas and won’t be home for a few months and it’s so loud. Am I okay just getting a Leatherman and taking the screws out that look like it would remove that panel so I can check the fan out? I think maybe a hair might have gotten in and it wrapped around the fan or something. A lot of people over here are “computer buffs” but won’t touch someone’s personal laptop for fear of messing it up.

I have already tried blowing the canned air into it and it didn’t seem to help, it just confirmed that it was the fan (I got it spinning with the air and it still made noise). I just want to make sure I won’t do something totally stupid that will definitely ruin my computer because I take online classes. Thanks.

by Guest Geek on May 4, 2009

Q: I dropped My Toshiba Equium A200-1VO and it wont load up onto windows fully, which means I cannot use it. When you turn it on everything is fine up to the welcome screen in Windows Vista. From here it starts to make weird crackling noises and it beeps occasionally. It wont start up from here and these noises don’t stop.

Can I upgrade my Toshiba laptop’s graphics card?

by robert on October 30, 2008

Q: I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4227 laptop and I am wondering if I can upgrade the graphics card for games or can the laptop play games as is from factory?

A: According to my research, it is impossible to upgrade your laptop’s graphics capabilities. Indeed, there are only a handful of laptops with upgradeable graphics on the market today.

Even if it were possible to upgrade your laptop’s graphics capabilities, both an official PDF from Toshiba and a comprehensive online review of your laptop confirm that many other components inside your laptop are too old/slow for serious gaming. Your laptop is therefore limited to running only older games and/or games with very simple graphics.

TIP: Computers that are designed for gaming have dedicated graphics (sometimes called discrete graphics), while non-gaming computers use either integrated graphics or hybrid graphics.

Upgrading The Graphics Card On A Toshiba Laptop

by matt on September 4, 2008

Q: Is it possible for me to upgrade the Radeon hd3470 graphics card in my Toshiba a305-s6841 laptop?

A: Unfortunately the answer is no. Most laptops do not allow you to upgrade anything besides the hard drive and the memory (RAM). This is the case for your Toshiba laptop as well.
