How come my USB port will charge devices but my computer wont recognize they are connected?

by Guest Geek on June 6, 2009

Q: How can I fix my USB ports on a Compaq Presario SR192ONX? Everything is updated. The device manager says the USB port is working properly. The actual ports charge my iPod, however, will not read or recognize anything. My computer will not even make the beep beep noise when a device is plugged in. Is the motherboard bad?

How come my USB port stopped working on my Toshiba laptop after installing driver updates?

by Guest Geek on April 19, 2009

Q: I have a Toshiba P35 S605 laptop and was installing driver updates when all my USB ports stopped working. Cannot use USB mouse, flash drive, anything USB.

I unchecked power settings on root hub on devices, checked BIOS boot and all is set to par. Any ideas on what to do next?

Can I make turn a USB Pocket drive into a boot disk and use it to install Windows XP?

by Guest Geek on March 1, 2009

Q: I want to dump Vista off of my HP Slimline s3400f and install XP Pro instead. The 3400 has an internal poket drive. My laptop (HP 6820 with XP) has a 2.5″ internal drive. I need to access DOS on the 3400 for the Boot Disk to operate. Can I purchase an external Pocket drive with USB connect and create the boot disk, and then use that boot disk to format and install XP on the 3400?

How come I cannot get a USB pen drive and USB mouse to work at the same time?

by Guest Geek on February 28, 2009

Q: In these last few days, whenever I attach a new pen drive and optical mouse to my PC, a window comes up requesting for the installation of a new hardware (which obviously is never found because no CD came with the mouse or pen drive).

Subsequently both mouse and pen drive doesn’t work on my PC. I’ve already tried them on my laptop and they worked just fine (with no installation required).

I don’t think it’s a USB problem with my PC because everything else that has long been attached to the PC (through USB connection) works just fine!

Transfering Files From Dead Computer To New Computer

by matt on July 28, 2008

Q: How do I transfer files from my old computer to my new one when my old one can’t turn on anymore?

A: You have two choices when it comes to transferring your files from a computer that does not work to your new computer.

The cheapest solution is to take the hard drive out of your old computer and put it in your new computer. This usually requires knowing a little bit about computers and possibly about jumpers on your hard drive.

If you do not mind spending the money and doing it yourself is not something you want to deal with or do not think you can then you can always bring the two computers to your local computer shop and for a nominal fee they should be more than happy to move the drive from the dead computer to the new computer.

The other solution is to buy a USB hard drive enclosure that you would install your old hard drive into. So you would take your drive out of the old computer and put it in the USB hard drive enclosure. The process is pretty simple and this solution would actually be more cost effective than bringing both computers to a computer shop. Also, once you are done, you have an external USB hard drive that you can use for backups (once, of course, you get all the data off the drive that you need).

Parallel To USB Printer Cable

by Angela on March 28, 2008

Q: I have a very old CPU Unit and it does not have a USB port but it does have parallel port. The new printers do not have a parallel port though they only have USB ports. Is there a cable that has a parallel port that can connect to a USB printer?

A: Yes they do make a cable that would connect from the parallel port of your computer on one end and then connect to the USB port on your printer on the other end. I am sure that you would be able to find one by visiting your local Best Buy, Circuit City, RadioShack store, or online at Amazon.com. You will want to ask for a Parallel to USB printer cable.

Toshiba USB Drives Not Working

by Angela on February 7, 2008

Q: I have a Toshiba Satellite running Windows XP Media Center Edition and I have four USB Ports but I seem to only be able to use one at a time. Regardless of which port I use it is always listed as the E:\ drive. I have tried using the “map network drive” function, but I’m not trying to map a network (and don’t have one set up), I just want to be able to use multiple USB ports at the same time. How might I set that up?

A: I have found numerous issues with USB ports on the Toshiba Satellite laptops. All of them seem to point to the BIOS driver. I have included a direct link to the BIOS updates. The only thing you need to do is select the model of the laptop and it will list the BIOS drivers when you follow the link.

Download the driver and install. It appears that a BIOS version 1.90 has fixed all previous cases of this exact issue. If you need further assistance please let me know.
