Analyze index.dat

by matt on November 17, 2009

Q: What is an index.dat analyzer and why would I want to analyze my index.dat file?

A: Index.dat is a file that Internet Explorer uses to cache recently visited websites. An index.dat analyzer would be a program that would analyze the information stored in index.dat. People would normally use an index.dat analyzer if they want to see what they viewed or if they want to see what someone else viewed using their web browser. Read the rest of this entry »

Fix unable to open url error message in Word

by matt on November 8, 2009

Q: I have Mozilla FireFox set as my default web browser and when I click a URL in a Word Document I get an error message from Word saying “Unable to open [URL]. Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server.” Word does not even try to open Mozilla FireFox it just tells me that it cannot open the URL. Is there anyway I can fix this?

A: This is one of those great Windows/Word features where if you don’t have Internet Explorer set as your default browser then you are going to have to either set Internet Explorer to be your default browser or do a tweak to your registry that I don’t suggest most people do. The easy solution is obviously just to set Internet Explorer as your default browser. Read the rest of this entry »

Getting started online

by matt on October 7, 2009

Q: I have Windows XP and use Internet Explorer. A few weeks ago some of the sites I visit stopped working. Some of the links on the pages are showing up as gif files instead of html but only on my computer. Any other computer I use works just fine. Does anyone know what might be wrong and how to fix it?

A: The first thing everyone should do when getting started online is to make sure they have a good antivirus software package running like AVG. The second thing everyone should do when they get online is to download a second web browser. We suggest everyone download FireFox. Read the rest of this entry »

Disable FireFox siteSpecific zoom

by matt on October 6, 2009

Q: How can I set my zoom & keep it from changing on it’s own?

A: In FireFox there is a domain level memory for the zoom of the browser. In previous versions of FireFox if you accidentally zoomed in on a page like askageek.com you could just close your browser and then open it up again and you would be at the regular zoom level. In the latest versions of FireFox, the browser actually remembers what zoom level you last had on a specific site so closing your browser will no longer fix the problem. Recover deleted history

by matt on October 5, 2009

Q: How do I recover deleted browser history?

A: The first thing you should try doing to restore your deleted history is to use the System Restore feature. Since your deleted history is stored in your restore points you can select the last restore point from before the history was deleted. Be careful here though since it is possible you will lose data you don’t want to lose so make sure to backup. Read the rest of this entry »

How come I get JavaScript errors on websites I visit?

by Guest Geek on August 8, 2009

Q: There is a site that I use to go to without a problem. It is a christian website that has an essay written to answer any question you have. Throughout the text they have bible verses that when you put the cursor on them it brings up the bible verse in a little box. Recently it stopped doing this and instead a JavaScript Error pops up on my screen with a description like this: Unterminated String Constant for line 1 then another pops up for line five and so on. Can you please help me fix this problem?
