Getting downloads to work in Vista

by matt on July 28, 2009

Q: I have a new Dell running Vista and IE8. I am trying to download adobe flash but the “do you want to install program” box does not appear. I have tried other programs as well. All pop-up blockers are off and antivirus is off as well but still no luck.

A: You should try downloading FireFox. You might have to download FireFox on another computer then burn it to a disk and install it that way because it sounds like your downloads get messed up with IE8.

Fixing a laptops wireless connection that drops

by matt on July 25, 2009

Q: I have recently purchased an HP G70 laptop with Windows Vista. When it is plugged in by Ethernet cable it runs fine but while using the wireless option to connect to the Internet it constantly looses connection. If I turn off the wireless card and then turn it back on then it will work again for a while.

I do not have this problem with any of the other laptops in the house so I am certain it is specific to this laptop. What can I do to solve this problem once and for all?

A: You should go to HP’s website to check to see if there are any updated drivers for your wireless card.  If there are then you should install them and chances are that will resolve your problem.

If there aren’t any new drivers for your wireless card or that doesn’t work then you should contact HP support. Given that it’s a brand new system you shouldn’t be having that kind of problem. Especially when your other laptops work just fine with the wireless access point.

Computer manufacturers usually include a powerful power supply

by Pamela on July 13, 2009

Q: My computer fried itself today. It smells all burnt and everything so I’m buying a new one with these specs.

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed w/COA
  • AMD Phenom X4 9500 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • 3 GB DDR2 RAM
  • 720 GB (2 x 360GB) SATA hard drive
  • 16x SuperMulti DVD±RW DL drive with LightScribe Technology
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT PCI Express video card
  • High Definition audio, 8 speaker configurable
  • 22″ HP Widescreen Rotating LCD Monitor w/HDMI & USB Hub

It only has a 300 watt power supply. My question is, is that enough? If it’s not and I have to buy a bigger one, does it have to be the same brand as the computer? It’s an HP.

A: Yes it’s enough.

I’d also find it hard to believe that HP would sell you a computer that didn’t have a power supply in it that would support the internal components.

As a side note, if you’re planning on doing any high end gaming with this new system, you might want to consider a different video card. The 8500GT is a great general purpose card for watching video and surfing the web, but it isn’t something you’d want to be buying to play Crysis, Half-Life 2, etc.

Set permissions on files from your old hard drive

by matt on July 11, 2009

Q: I bought a new PC and tried to add the hard drive from my old PC to the new PC. The install went ok and the drive shows up. I can see the files but I can’t access them. It says I do not have permission. The new PC is running Vista and the old is Windows XP. Is there anyway I can access the files?

A: When you move a hard drive from a computer running Windows XP to a computer running Windows Vista you will normally have to “take ownership” of the files. We suggest you read the tutorial for Taking Ownership of a file. The tutorial contains great directions and screenshots that will help you solve your problem.

How do I get Realworld to run on a Windows Vista computer?

by Guest Geek on July 3, 2009

Q: We run an old accounting program in DOS – Realworld – v8.6. It’s working fine in XP. We have a new computer we want to run it on – it’s a Vista machine. We need to change the config.sys (config.nt in XP) to change the files= from files=40 to files=128 and edit the himem.sys settings. The program errors out – stating not enough memory. We can’t seem to find where to properly set these changes in the Vista machine. Any suggestions?

How come I cannot get any software to burn a DVD?

by Guest Geek on June 21, 2009

Q: My computer has started to act weird recently and I am far from computer savvy. I have windows vista home premium. When I place a blank DVD into the computer, the normal pop up comes up which asks me if I want to burn a DVD using windows, media player, or movie maker.

I proceed to the formatting stage but now all of a sudden it says that my DVD can not be formatted what so ever! I tried movie maker and windows media but they have different reasons why I can not burn my movie. It all has to be stemming from the same thing right? All of them have worked previously so that is why I am assuming that. Nvidia was recently removed from my computer somehow and maybe that has something to do with it? A after I shut down my computer they asked me to reinstall it and I did.
