How come my Belkin range extender keeps losing connection every 20 minutes?

by on May 1, 2013

Q: I recently moved into a new studio at a friends house, it is a remodel of his detached garage. I am connecting to his wifi for my internet service. I am only about 60ft away from the router but was getting a weak signal at times and would sometimes lose the signal. I decided to buy a Belkin f9k1106 range extender. Setup was easy and had great signal and speeds. Only problem i have run into is every 20 minutes it loses connection for 5 secs or so and gets a yellow triangle over the status logo and says limited connection. It automatically reconnects and I go on, but the problem is when im gaming or watching a movie online, it shuts down some programs that are open and i have to reopen them and obviously if i do that while gaming, my game ends or i have to restart the movie. I have been asking everywhere for a solution but no one seems to know so I thought I would give this a shot. Another interesting thing is I have tested the wifi when sitting outside and have yet to receive a limited connection interruption when sitting out there. Its a very odd situation but hoping someone here may be able to help.

How come my Internet speed is considerably slower when I am connected to my WiFi repeater?

by on April 6, 2012

Q: I have a 300N router and a wi-fi repeater….speed near the repeater is 4.0 Mbps download and .25 Mbps upload….when I move closer to the router, speed increases to 17.24 Mbps download and 1.78 Mbps upload Question: should the repeater be a 300N (does one even exist) or do you think there is something else going on?

BTW – I also have a Mac-mini hooked up with an Ethernet cable – hooked to the Router – speeds in that instance are 20.45 Mbps download and 1.8 Mbps upload.

How can I extend a wireless network that I don’t have control over?

by on February 12, 2011

Q: I live in an RV park that offers free wireless internet which I receive on my dell laptop. However, the signal strength is very weak and drops even lower later in the day when I use it most. Is there an inexpensive way to increase the reception or signal strength? I have no idea what type wireless is provided. I do know there is a large antenna about 250 feet from my RV. There are no obstructions between me and the antenna.
